Carbon Tax on Power Generation

The 2011 Budget introduced a carbon tax on power generation from 2013. The tax, or "carbon support rate", when added to the cost of EU emissions allowances will set a minimum floor price for carbon to encourage investment in renewable electricity generation. The carbon floor price will then be steadily increased between 2013 and 2020.

The announcement led to an immediate rise in wholesale electricity rates from 2013 onwards.
